Close the Floodgates!

STEAM in Action – who said scientists and engineers aren’t artistic?

  • Living by the coast, one is quite familiar with the concept of flooding.  Luckily, I live on a hill but many coastal residents have learned to cope with floods.

At Wacky Bots, we discussed various mechanisms for coping with floods.  Some kids mentioned the use of sand bags near doorways, and others had actually seen floodgates in action!

We discussed causes of floods like tsunamis and storms; then built our very own floodgates to control the river water level during a flood in order to protect residents.  Everyone got creative with the felt tip pens – creating their very own flood environment.  We also created a lever using a tilt sensor that opened and closed floodgates based on tilt orientation.  We then experimented with the motion sensor, getting our floodgates to open when the river level rose too high.

It was amazing to see STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) in action.  Robotics truly nurtures creativity.
